Damaris N. Mireles
I am a Wichita State University student majoring in English and Spanish Literature with a Certificate in Spanish for the Professions, and I am also an undergraduate research assistant on the Alce su Voz healthcare language access project funded by the Promoting Equitable Access to Language Services in Health and Human Services (PEALS) initiative of the Office of Minority Health (OMH). Alce su Voz is important to me because I am passionate about serving my community. As someone who grew up interpreting for my family and still does so, I think it's incredibly important for my community to know that they have the right to access their needed information in their own language. While working with Alce su Voz I have been able to help reach the Spanish-speaking community and help people learn about the different ways to advocate for their linguistic rights that affect their day-to-day life.
Soy una estudiante de Wichita State University, especializándome en Literatura en Inglés y Español, con un certificado de «Español para las Profesiones» y también soy una asistente de investigación de pregrado de Alce su Voz, en el proyecto de acceso lingüístico a los servicios de salud financiado por la iniciativa «Promoviendo el acceso equitativo a los servicios lingüísticos en los servicios humanos y de salud» (PEALS, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Oficina de Salud para las Minorías (OMH, por sus siglas en inglés). Alondra Aguilera
My name is Alondra Aguilera, I just graduated with a degree in Pre-K - 12 Spanish Education from Wichita State. Alce su Voz has given me an opportunity to use my skills in designing materials and using social media as a method to advocate for members of my own community here in Wichita, which is greatly important to me. I hope to continue advocating for the Latine community here in Wichita and to work for more equity towards our community. My work on this project until now has been funded by the Kansas Health Foundation.
Mi nombre es Alondra Aguilera, y acabo de graduarme de la universidad Wichita State University con una licenciatura en Educación con especialización en Enseñanza de Español de Pre-K a 12. Alce su Voz me ha dado la oportunidad de usar mis habilidades en el diseño de materiales y el uso de las redes sociales como método para abogar por los miembros de mi propia comunidad, aquí en Wichita, lo cual es muy importante para mí. Jorge de la Hoz
My name is Jorge de la Hoz. I am currently studying for my MA in Spanish at Wichita State University. I came to know about the organization Alce su Voz from one of my professors, Dr. Rachel Showstack. This organization is important to me because it allows me to help the community. Even though I have only been in Wichita for a short time, Alce su Voz has allowed me to connect with many individuals and learn about many social realities. I am in charge of translating, proofreading and editing content, and look forward to continue doing so with the organization.
Mi nombre es Jorge de la Hoz. Estoy estudiando mi maestría en Español en Wichita State University. Me enteré de la organización Alce su Voz por una de mis profesoras, la doctora Rachel Showstack. Para mí esta organización es importante porque me permite ayudar a la comunidad. Raúl Rangel
My name is Raúl Rangel-Fernández. I am originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. I am a graduate student at Wichita State University working on a MA in Spanish and a graduate student at KU working on a MA in Slavic Linguistics. I am the Graduate Research Assistant working alongside the Increase the Reach (ITR) grant to help increase vaccine equity in Guatemalan Indigenous communities in the state of Kansas. I have experience with two Mayan languages, Kaqchikel and Yucatec Maya and I am looking forward to being a voice for a community that has often been left without a voice. Alce Su Voz is a great organization that allows me to continue to give voice to the community. I am looking forward to what’s to come.
Mi nombre es Raúl Rangel-Fernández. Soy originario de Guadalajara, México. Soy estudiante de posgrado en Wichita State University en el programa de maestría en Español y estudiante de posgrado en Kansas University (KU) en el programa de maestría en Lingüística Eslava. Maame Adwoa Amissah Ankrah
My name is Maame Adwoa Amissah Ankrah. My major is MA-Spanish, and I am also pursuing a certificate in Spanish for the Professions. Alce su Voz is important to me because it helps me put into practice the translation and interpreting skills and the ethics that I have learned, as the organization advocates for Spanish-speaking patients to be able to have access to quality healthcare with the help of trained interpreters. I am looking forward to understanding more about the needs of the Spanish-speaking communities and seeing how I can use my bilingual ability to help as well as, improving my interpreting skills. I will be the graduate student research assistant on the OMH PEALS award in Summer 2023.
Mi nombre es Maame Adwoa Amissah Ankrah. Estoy haciendo mi maestría en Español y también estoy terminando un certificado en Español para las Profesiones. Alce su Voz es importante para mí porque me ayuda a poner en práctica las habilidades de traducción e interpretación y la ética que he aprendido, ya que la organización aboga para que los pacientes hispanos puedan tener acceso a una atención médica de calidad con la ayuda de intérpretes capacitados. Espero entender más sobre las necesidades de las comunidades de habla hispana y mejorar mis habilidades de interpretación, y ver cómo puedo usar mi habilidad bilingüe para ayudar. Hello, my name is Marili Bravo. I am an undergrad student at Wichita State University and a research assistant on the OMH language access grant. My major is Pre- law Criminal Justice. This organization is important to me because it is something I strongly believe in. Alce Su Voz has had a great impact with my community among the issues of translation with health equity. I have been able to see the different impacts of the opportunities of aid the organizations bring because of the workshops from Alce Su Voz. Furthermore, I am extremely ecstatic to see what is to come from the organization Alce Su Voz.

Melissa Medina
Hi, my name is Melissa Medina and I am a graduate research assistant working on the OMH language access grant for Alce su Voz. I have worked in health care for the past decade and know the barriers to interpretation services. As a child I used to be an interpreter for my mother who is Spanish speaking only. I joined the effort by ensuring health services organizations provide high quality and appropriate interpretation services. I look forward to ensuring health service organizations provide high - quality and appropriate language services to non- english speakers. In the summer, we will continue conducting our interviews and educating providers on language access resources.
Hola, mi nombre es Melissa Medina y soy estudiante de maestría y asistente de investigación trabajando con Alce su Voz en la subvención de acceso lingüístico de la OMH. Savannah Paschal
Savannah Paschal is graduating this semester with a BA in Pre-K-12 Spanish Education and plans to go to law school in the future. Savannah manages the participant support stipends and conducts research with Alce su Voz. As recently highlighted in WSU News, our current focus on civic engagement grew out of an idea that Savannah proposed as a class project in Dr. Showstack’s Spanish in the U.S. course. Savannah is incredibly excited to continue to help the local Hispanic community in their work with Alce su Voz.
